A few years back, the “Muscles from Brussels” Jean Claude Van Damme (a famous action movie star) partnered with Volvo to prove exactly how stable and precise the Volvo Dynamic Steering system is. Let’s say they found a creative way to more than prove the point. We’ll start by explaining what Volvo Dynamic Steering is and the benefits it offers to heavy truck drivers, and then we’ll discuss the video.

Volvo Dynamic Steering is a revolutionary steering system only available in the Volvo heavy truck lineup. The technology receives input two thousand times per second from sensors that monitor everything from the yaw rate, the steering angle, wheel speed and drivers actions. And what is the benefit/goal that is derived from all of this you may be wondering?While there are many ancillary benefits, primarily there are two key things the Volvo engineers were shooting for.  The first is to improve driver safety and the second is improving the drivers comfort and ease of driving.  Both of these are accomplished largely in part through vibration dampening, which balances cross wind, reversing and makes maneuvering in tight areas substantially easier than driving vehicles without Volvo Dynamic Steering.

Everything is easier, everything is smoother and truckers expend less energy. On test drives, it only takes a few moments of driving a rig equipped with Volvo dynamic steering for heavy rig drivers quickly feel the difference. When you consider that this technology can make that much of a difference in just a few moments, imagine how much easier it would make 8 hours of driving day after day! And now, back to the Jean Claude Van Damme video. If you watch the video it shows Van Damme progressively dropping into the splits, with one foot on each rear view mirror of one straight truck and a tractor trailer combo.

And if that wasn’t good enough, the drivers are driving in reverse the entire time! While there were apparently support wires that can not be seen in the video holding Van Damme in the event he fell, the simple fact is the stunt showed the unimaginable stability and precision better than any amount of words ever could.
